Summerland Community Arts Council

The mission of the Summerland Community Arts Council is to promote and facilitate the awareness and appreciation of the arts in the Summerland area through education, action and advocacy. Our goal is to support artists of all kinds and provide opportunities for the people of Summerland to participate in creative activities.

Our Impact Why We Exist

The mission statement of the Summerland Community Arts Council is to promote and facilitate the awareness and appreciation of the arts in the Summerland area through education, action and advocacy.

Our mandate has been strengthened by the District of Summerland Council's adoption of the official Cultural Plan.  We are looking forward to expanding our community services and programs in step with the plan.

We have a new home, with the support of the District of Summerland, and are excited about the District's renovations to create a vibrant community arts centre.  We strive to support artists of all kinds and  to provide arts and culture experiences for all the people of Summerland.

Our Story What We Do

The Summerland Community Arts Council (SCAC) is a board of Summerland residents who meet monthly to carry out the mandate of the SCAC. We are a registered not-for-profit organization/charity. The following programs and events are the result of the efforts of one full-time staff member, a large number of volunteers on committees, and some additional student workers paid with grants, with support from the District of Summerland and local businesses and residents.

Programs

The Summerland Community Arts Council offers programs year round for Adults and Children.

For young people, our After School and Home-school programs offer wonderful ways to explore art and creativity. The Annual Community Banner project starts every year on the first day of spring break and is open to everyone. Banners have been brightening the streets of Summerland for 16 years and of course our highly regarded Summer Arts Program will return again in July.

We have started a series of Creative Community workshops, where residents can come and try out a variety of arts activities.  Some of them have included:  drumming, ukulele, collage, quilting, rug hooking, and painting.

Events

The Summerland Community Arts Centre lies at the heart of the town and the arts community.  Our Art Gallery runs a series of shows featuring different artists. As each show opens. you will have an opportunity to meet the artists and to learn what drives their creativity.

During Earth Week in April, you are invited to take part in activities that celebrate environmental education and action. If you want to learn about simple things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint, take action, and have fun, attend this week of family activities.

In August 2018, SCAC owill organize the Summerland Art Walk. Experience the original works of local emerging and established Artists on display throughout Summerland and the surrounding area, including restaurants, retail outlets, and wineries. The work showcased over the event will include paintings, photography, jewellery, pottery, textiles and sculpture.

Every Wednesday starting in July and running through August, SCAC presents Wednesdays in the Park Music Concerts (WOW) at Memorial Park from 6:30-8:30pm. The musical theme varies each week so there is a little something for everyone! Families are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets or even a picnic and enjoy the music.

Season Sparkles, the SCAC’s annual gift sale, opens on “Light Up” night, the last Friday of November and runs until we close for the holidays. The Art Centre is transformed into a winter wonderland inside and out with displays of handcrafted items for sale in the Main Gallery and the Gift Gallery. Visitors are treated to hot apple cider and sweets while they shop on Opening Night.

We also have a Gift Shop, where local artists can display and sell their art.
