South Okanagan Montessori School Society
Our Impact Why We Exist
Our mandate is to provide affordable, quality child care and education for families from Peachland to Penticton. We originally began as an independent Montessori elementary school focussed on small class sizes, hands-on learning, daily French, and a committment to educating children in all the areas of their development. We are the only non-denominational independent school in this area and provide a valuable alternative for families who are looking for something different for their children than the local public schools. Over the years we have seen the need for more child care in our area and have added full-day junior Kindergarten for 3 and 4 year-olds, a half-day preschool program, an after school program, and a summer day camp.
Our Story What We Do
Our main objective is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help children to develop within themselves the attitudes, habits, skills and ideas essential for a lifetime of independent, creative thinking and learning.
We believe in educating the whole child: the emotional, social, academic, physical and moral development of each student. In our elementary school, we offer daily physical education, daily French instruction, exposure to music and the arts, and work to foster a sense of community through leadership, mentoring, and community outreach.
We are committing to accomplishing these objectives while keeping fees and tuition low, and offer an extensive bursary program to ensure we remain an affordable option for the families needing our services.
Our Programs How We Do It
We offer the following programs:
1. Licensed preschool-a half-day program for children ages 2 1/2 to 4. There are 19 children attending currently.
2. Licensed after school program- after school care for students attending our school and the public elementary schools. Currently there are 25 children enrolled in this program.
3. Licensed summer program- care for school-aged children from 8am to 5:30 each day. 19 children can attend each day. Last year the program was attended by 32 children throughout the summer.
4. Independent Montessori school- from full-day junior Kindergarten for 3 and 4 year-olds up to Grade 5. There are currently 50 children enorolled this year.
What You Can Do
We are able to offer the children a wide variety of experiences with the support of our surrounding community. If you have an area of expertise or something you are passionate about and would like to share it with some of our children, please contact us. Some examples of this include a volunteer who came in and did wood-working with one of the classes and a local gentleman who comes at Christmas and reads The Grinch Who Stole Christmas in full grinch makeup to all of the students.
We are also always accepting financial donations. Our committment to keeping fees and tuition low in spite of rising outside costs means that it is a struggle to buy and replace things such as furniture, sports equipment, and hands-on learning materials. Additionally, we are currently trying to raise money to purchase a passanger van or small bus for all of our program to use, but especially for the summer program so that those children can do more field and beach trips throughout the summer.
