Dragonfly Pond Family Society

Dragonfly Pond's mission is to support families with children 0-18 years of age who have complex care needs and/or disabilities and who live in the South Okanagan Similkameen region.

Our Impact Why We Exist

Dragonfly Pond provides coordinated services that will:

- Enhance existing programs by coordinating services and programs that create links and partnerships that will support the promotion of healthy families and strengthen support services for families.

- Reduce isolation, burn out, and crisis within families by providing a range of support services.

- Provide community based programs with each geographic center to strengthen and support families at the community level.

- Incease community awareness though volunteerism, in-kind contributions, and financial support.

- Reduce the need for more costly care and service through a preventative focus.

Our Story What We Do

Dragonfly Pond Family Society was started in 2000, by a group of parents, caregivers and health care professionals, who saw a need to better support families of children with complex care needs and/or disabilities. We became an incorporated non-profit society in 2001.

Dragonfly Pond Family Society, through its programs, addresses the community by bringing families together, providing a safe, nurturing and non-judgemental enviornment. The programs provided enable children to have fun, parents to meet other families for networking and friendship, and for siblings to enjoy the company of other familes via Respitality South Okanagan, which provides parents with a much needed break, as well as an annual Family Christmas Party.

Dragonfly Pond also provides members with a quartely newsletter, access to a familiy lending library and other community activities, such as "The Uniquely Fashionable Fashionshow", where 25 of the 29 models(ages 2-24) had complex care needs and/or disabilities.

Our Programs How We Do It

Dragonfly Pond recognizes the challenges of parenting a child with complex care needs and/or disabilities and develops and improves inclusive programs for families. The goal is to provide a safe, welcoming environment, where children can spend time playing and learning, siblings can interact with other children living in similar situations, and parents are given the opportunity to connect with other parents, share stories and play along side their children.

Dragonfly Pond currently offers: a children's program over spring break and summer; a weekly recycling program; monthly youth group program (which is funded by the recycling program and directed by the participants); Respitality South Okanagan, where opportunities are coordinated for parents so they can enjoy an evening out to relax; a monthly family get together support group for parents with younger children; and an annual family Christmas party.

Dragonfly Pond is very proud of the programs they offer children and their families. We are very aware and grateful to our communty and grant donors such as the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen. Without the ongoing support from our community partners we would not be able to provide the much needed services to the many families raising children with complex care needs and/or diabilities in the south Okanagan.

What You Can Do

Dragonfly Pond Family Society is only possible with the support and generousity of our community. We rely on grants, donations, volunteerism, and all other types of support and partnerships with in the areas we serve.

To be a part of Dragonfly Pond is a fun and gratifying experience, and one which will make a great impact on the families we support. We are always looking for volunteers for our children's program, individuals who want to share their expertise in fundraising efforts, financial contrabutions and /or in-kind donations of materials or services.
