The Board of School District No 67 (Okanagan Skaha)

FEED the BODY, FEED the MIND. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Food is a basic need that everyone requires in order to function to their highest levels. Children learn the importance of eating well and exercising which starts their day with energy and enthusiasm.

Our Impact Why We Exist

The purpose of the Breakfast Program is to provide a healthy breakfast for all students who would otherwise not have one for various reasons.   The program is free.  Everyone is welcome in a non-stigmatized environment.  We give the children the opportunity to make new friends, try educational activities and have a safe place to come to.  This time also encourages life skills, showing respect, developing manners, learning about hygiene, sharing with others in conversation and giving  students a positive start to the day.  Spending time with students in the morning makes them feel important and cared for.

Our Story What We Do

The Giant's Head Breakfast Program was initiated in 2001 to ensure all students had access to a nutritious breakfast.  Since then, the breakfast program has become much more, it now not only encourages a healthy breakfast but a safe place for students to talk to volunteers and their peers.  Volunteers gather each morning to prepare breakfast Tuesdays through Fridays.  The number of students that participate each day varies from 54-92 children.

Children learn by example and model behaviors from their parents, teachers and peers.  We provide information and education around healthy choices and then provide a variety of foods.  By doing so in a group setting, they are more likely to overcome any personal bias towards something they have never tasted.  A well fed student results in a child that is more able to learn and function throughout the day.

Our coordinator sits with the students to hear their stories and approaches education with fun and laughter.

Donations go to the Board of Education of SD67 and an official tax receipt is issued with a "Thank-you" letter.  When our school receives the money we send a note of appreciation signed by the students and coordinator. We also acknowledge

donors through our sponsor list outside our kitchen, the school bulletin, local newspaper and the volunteers premote the program.

Our Programs How We Do It

Summerland is a very supportive community.  Financial and in-kind donations are provided from Summerland businesses, Service Clubs, Giant's Head Parent Advisory and individuals.  Since we are dependent on donations we cannot assume that what we receive one year will be available for the next year, so the coordinator is always looking for new donors and writing grants.

What You Can Do

Giant’s Head Elementary Breakfast for Learning is requesting a grant of $1000.00 to help meet our budget for 2018.             We would like to continue to provide free breakfasts. Your donation is vital for the continuation of this program.  Your exposure of our program gives the community the awarness and what the need is.
