Agur Lake Camp ModelOur Impact Why We Exist

Our Mandate

To operate and enhance our barrier free wilderness camp for children and adults with special needs, along with their families and caregivers.

Where We Started

The story of Agur Lake Camp started over 30 years ago when Bonnar Dowler vowed to establish a camp for children with special needs and their families. At the time Bonnar was visiting his terminally ill infant son at BC Children's Hospital and saw the many children who would never know the joy of gliding across a lake in a canoe or the wonder of a starry night in the forest.

Our Story What We Do

Who We Are

We will offer a safe environment to those who would not normally be able to attend a camp due to physical, sensory and/or mental challenges. Agur Lake Camp will accept the affected individual regardless of age as well as their family or caregiver to support them.

The camp is located 20km west of Summerland, British Columbia and is available to children and adults with special needs along with their families and caregivers throughout BC. The camp offers three fully furnished cabins, dry RV sites, two accessible fishings docks, paved trails, communal fire-pit, picnic pavilion, bbq's and an outdoor accessible washroom. The entire facility is mostly barrier free so that every camper, regardless of their special need, can enjoy nature and the outdoors.

In addition we offer our amenities to those that would like to make a day trip to the camp.  We recognize that many individuals and seniors with mobility issues are unable to experience camping and the wilderness. We have developed our day-use program to accommodate these needs. They can come to Agur Lake to picnic, fish from the docks and enjoy the paved walking trails on foot, with a walker or wheelchair. These outings can lift their spirits, give them a sense of freedom and provide them with an exciting change in their schedule.

"Agur Lake Camp is a place that will cater to the whole family as opposed to just the individual. That makes us unique. I think that is valuable because families are much stronger and happier when they are kept together." -Amanda Lewis, guest and previous Board of Directors member

Our Programs How We Do It

Agur Lake Camp facilities and accommodations are specially designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. Our docks, observation deck, paved trails, picnic pavilion with accessible tables, fire pit area, and outdoor washroom provides peace of mind to families and caregivers who care for those with special needs that may not have access to mainstream accommodation and outdoor recreation. The cabins are equipped with the specialized equipment needed to ensure the safety and comfort of the users.
